Progressive Discipline

In the Calgary Board of Education, our Progressive Student Discipline Philosophy is a school-wide approach that fosters a welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environment. Rooted in current research, it emphasizes maintaining a strong connection with the school community to support students' personal growth, sense of belonging, and positive responses to conflict. By focusing on relationships and respect for diversity, we create conditions that enhance student engagement and success. This approach includes a range of interventions, supports, and consequences, along with strategies that encourage positive behavior and long-term growth.

Logical, Consistent, Caring Consequences and Restorative Actions

At École Chinook Park School, we believe that consistent, caring consequences and restorative actions help students learn about their behavior, choices, and impact on others while maintaining their dignity.

Initial Response

Minor infractions are addressed through a conversation with staff, where students reflect on their behavior and establish a plan for restitution. Most incidents are managed within the classroom, lunchroom, or playground by staff, focusing on teaching and prevention.

Secondary Response

If initial responses are unsuccessful, or if the behaviour is serious, administration may become involved. Parents are contacted to support problem-solving, and consequences are determined based on individual needs, behaviour severity, and impact on others. Possible consequences include verbal reminders, loss of privileges, lunch or recess detention, community service in the school, or suspension. In more serious cases, additional resources may be accessed to support the student’s success.

At École Chinook Park School, we work together with families to create a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment for all.
