Lunch Supervision Program
All lunchroom students must register for the lunch supervision program. Register through MyCBE or in the School office. More information on our Lunch Supervision page.
Our school has a 4-day program (Mon – Thurs). Waiver applications are available online, on the same website page, for those who are eligible. Please register your children for the Lunch Supervision program if they stay at school during the lunch break.
Remember to clearly label your child’s lunch bag to avoid lost or misplaced items. Please send a nutritious and sufficient lunch for your child.
Points to note:
- Hot water and microwaves are not available.
- We do not have extra utensils so please include those.
- We have 3 lunch sessions:
- 11:22 to 11:45
- 11:45 to 12:08
- 12:08 to 12:30
- If a student requires additional time to eat, they are welcome to stay longer.
- Our school endorses a peanut/nut aware environment. Children with identified severe allergies are known to our staff. Families have ensured that medications are on site, and staff have been trained to recognize symptoms and administer medication. Families are asked to avoid peanuts etc. from classroom snacks (i.e., birthday treats). See more on our Illness & Medical page.
If you have any questions about our lunch supervision program, please contact Ms. Joyce, our lead lunch supervisor.
Lunchtime Expectations
During lunch, students are expected to follow these expectations:
- We are quiet during attendance.
- We sit while eating.
- We clear our desk and table.
- We respect our supervisor.
Fun Lunch
Chinook Park School Council offers both Fun Snacks and Fun Lunches at certain times in the year. This is a significant fund raising initiative for the school that also allows students and parents to take a break from routine morning snacks and lunches.
If you would like to participate, please register your student(s) on the Healthy Hunger website at HealthyHunger.ca . Once you have completed your registration you will be able to view the upcoming morning snack and lunch dates. Please note that you must re-register students each year for this food program.
Brown Bag Lunch
Program Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) program works in partnership with Calgary schools to make healthy lunches for students who would otherwise go hungry. Chinook Park School is able to offer this service to our students. If you would like to sign up your child(ren) for this program or volunteer to assist in lunch preparation, please contact Mme. Danielle Godbout.
Waste Free Program
This program was established to reduce the amount of garbage collected at our school for dumping into our city waste. Prior to the launch of this program, we collected at least four huge bags of garbage each day from the Lunch Program. To reduce this enormous amount of waste, we launched the Waste-Free Program, which is our part of our school’s recycling program. When students arrive at Chinook Park School the recycling program starts immediately.
What do we recycle?
- Compost – any kind of fruit or vegetables only (pits, seeds, skins, etc.)
- Milk and juice containers
- Plastic
- Waste-free – Each child is responsible for taking their lunch box leftovers home. This creates an awareness of waste, enables additional recycling and gives parents an opportunity to see what did not get eaten that day.
Home-Packed Lunch Tips for Parents
Lunch is an important part of your child’s day at school. Here are some tips to help you provide a lunch that is safe and nutritious with less waste.
Food Safety
- Keep cold food cold by using an insulated lunch bag and 1-2 ice packs.
- Keep hot food hot by using an insulated container. Preheat your container with boiling water before adding hot food. Microwave ovens are not available for elementary students.
- Pack non-perishables, such as granola bars and whole fruit, that can be kept at room temperature.
- Most CBE schools are nut-aware, please check with your child’s teacher for more information on nut allergies and other allergies in your child’s classroom.
Help Reduce Waste
- Bring a reusable water bottle.
- Pack just enough for a child to eat during lunch.
- Many schools participate in “boomerang lunches” (pack in/pack out), where all leftover items are returned home.
Tip: Pack a sealable bag or container labeled ‘garbage’ for uneaten food or open containers to avoid mess in the lunch bag.
In 2024, ten CBE schools participated in a waste audit conducted by Green Calgary. Here are a few suggestions from the audit to help minimize waste produced by packed lunches:
- Send less selections of food. Younger children have difficulty deciding what to eat when there is a lot of choice and sometimes end up not eating.
- When possible, use reusable containers for foods such as crackers and cut up fruits or vegetables.
Other Tips
- Make sure your child can open all packages by themselves.
- Involve your child in packing their lunch. Children involved in food preparation may be more likely to try new foods and eat what is packed, minimizing food waste.
- Aim to include a food from each food group – lean proteins, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables should be eaten daily (as per Canada’s Food Guide 2019).
- Some items, such as sandwiches, can be made ahead and frozen to save time. Note that some fillings such as fresh vegetables do not freeze well.
- Designate a shelf in the fridge/pantry at home for lunch items. This may help make packing lunches quicker and encourage independence for children packing their own lunches.
