Bon Vendredi! Happy Friday!

There is a lot of excitement in the school with summer just around the corner!

This week, we experienced a few days with poor air quality and adjusted accordingly. These include limiting outdoor time during the day, moving recess indoors, or shifting activities like PE to the gym. We also have an indoor recess schedule with alternative spaces ready to go when needed. We will continue to monitor the situation next week.

Unfortunately, due to poor air quality on Wednesday, our School Council’s year-end picnic had to be cancelled. We know this was disappointing for many, and we appreciate your understanding. We’ll keep you informed next week if there’s an opportunity to reschedule.

On a brighter note, there were still many joyful moments to celebrate this week. Our Grade 6 students continued to impress us as they completed the Math Part A of their Provincial Achievement Test: Great job!

Our kindergarten classes had a wonderful time exploring and learning during their field trip to the SAM Centre. Thank you to the staff and volunteers who made it possible. Meanwhile, our Grade 1 French Immersion students were proud to welcome their dads for a special Father’s Day picnic filled with smiles and connection. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped create these special moments, and a very happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads in our school community!

Message from School Council

ECPS Courtyard & Garden Update

With the warmer temperature of the past few weeks, the school gardens are coming to life!

Have you taken the time to "smell the roses" in the front school garden?  This space was designed in 2012 for the Grade 6 Legacy project.  Since then, it became overgrown and needed some tending too.  With a giant bag of soil, some shovels, weeding tools and a few new plants, this space is blooming and refreshed.  Thank you to the volunteers who made this happen!

Thanks to the volunteers of the past 3 years in digging out weeds, overgrown plants, and installing a wicking system to grow vegetables, the courtyard is looking great.  Mme. Julia's grade one class planted pumpkin, pole bean and tomato seeds earlier this spring and patiently grew them inside and introduced them to the outdoors for several weeks. The plants are now in our vegetable garden as part of the "Three Sisters Garden"

A "Three Sisters Garden" consists of corn, beans and squash.  It is a type of companion planting used by the Indigenous people of North America (namely Iroquios and Cherokee).  Ideally, the corn stalk provides a trellis for the pole beans to grow on, the bean plants add nitrogen to the soil and the squash leaves provide shade to the soil to help maintain moisture and keep out the weeds.  We used a wooden trellis for the beans, with the corn planted nearby as our growing season is short and doesn't always allow for the corn to be established before the summer holiday and school closure.  Hopefully, we will return in September to a bountiful harvest!

A huge THANK YOU to the Adventurers and their leaders who spent a few hours sweeping up and bagging leaves, and weeding to make the courtyard a welcoming space to spend time in. Great work!

If you have a green thumb, or are interested in doing some gardening at our school this month or in the fall,  please contact Carmen at chinookparkschool.courtyard@gmail.com Time commitment is very flexible!
